Went offroading? Post it up here. Share pics and videos of the trail and tell us how it went.

This is the place to share offroading trips and BS about it.

Clawhammer Trail - Johnson Valley, CA

I will try to update this with a little clearer details later on, but here is the short story.

Kyle, Matt & I ran Clawhammer Trail last weekend. I broke a couple CV axles. Both would have been easily avoided but I am still learning the quirks of having a front locker, and my wife needs to learn a little more throttle control in the hard stuff.

We got to the last obstacle and Matt broke a rear lower link, causing his pinion angle to shift and break a driveshaft. The hill was so steep and loose that Kyle and I couldn't pull him up the hill. we would just spin all tires. So Matt had to winch the last 1/4 mile up the hill. We would have finished the trail in about 4 hours without this breakage, but we ended up getting to the top of the trail in about 12 hours. Winching is slow, and we had to let it cool as much as possible to avoid it burning up.

Once at the top, we pulled the driveshaft, strapped a pry bar to the broken link, and swapped the broken CV axle. We got Matt back to the road where he camped out and called AAA in the morning to tow him home.

San Rafel Swell of central Utah.

Devils Racetrack.

Ran from north (coal wash) to south (I-70)

I would call it 5-5.5/10 if you pick all the hard lines like I did. (few mediumish ledges and 2 stair sections)

Noobs would struggle.

Hard core dual locked on 40s would be bored.

It was a good fun time four our small group

Me on 33s without my rear e locker working made it a good challenge in a few spots
My buddy in his 2017 taco that he is still afraid to hurt beyond slider sliding.

After picking up my boys from school today they wanted me to drive over a dirt pile in a vacant lot near our house so I told my 8 year old he had to steer, I put it in double low 1 and got out. LOL . Not really much of wheeling but at 3pm on a Thursday I will take what I can get. :)

Come install mine for me
when you are ready let me know and I will try to come up and give you a hand. One thing I would suggest is to make sure you replace your bearings in the reduction box. I didn't and they make a lot of noise and so at some point they will be getting replaces. I really hate doing a job twice but seem to do it a lot lol

I'm looking at like 7k to get one installed. Most of that is the cost of installing a fj transfer case and the crawl box itself.

5k in labor. No way is that a 50 hour job. I had Yotamasters source and replace all the bearings plus put a Marlin input shaft in. Then Eric shipped me the crawl box and adapters. Total was 1500 from them and that's all the adapters, crawl box plus shipping it all. Another 200 for the shifters.

I have a total of maybe 20 hours into the install. Get everything and do it yourself.

Dude on T4R was just having the FJ case dilemma and they told him 2200 to install just the fj case. It requires modifying the oil pan and cross member plus changing the driveshaft lengths. The crawl box is another 3300ish or so just for the box. So that's 5500, if it's 1500 in labor that's not too bad really.

edit: 2200 for the dual case crawl box.
