Broke something on the trail. Post it up.
Had the epic recovery from hell. Tell the story.
Lost your CV on the way to the mall? Let's here about it.

There's a wealth of info on how to make your rig stronger, better, faster. Even with that info wheeling an IFS rig will cause shit to break. Maybe by posting our carnage here we can save someone else the headache in the future. Plus, it's just fun to see the carnage.

Since this is an IFS centric forum I figured I'd start with a blown CV or two. Yeah, it's mundane but everyone has to start somewhere. lol

Everyone of those was broken on the Dusy/Ershim. There's no cool recovery story to go along with those. They where all replaced easily.

One thing I did learn though, thanks to @rkntoy, was the bottle jack trick. He has the factory bottle jack with a lug nut welded to the crank handle. Instead of getting out the hi-lift you just place the bottle jack under the LCA. Once aligned use an impact on the crank handle. In seconds your tire is off the ground and the suspension is also compressed. That makes swapping out a CV so much easier. I would recommend anyone that wheels modify the jack and use it for front suspension repairs whenever possible.

Does blowing my elbow out on Mengel Pass in death valley last year count?

That's me on the ground getting it popped back in place. We had run into that guy earlier in the day and he was on his way up when it happened. Had ski mountain rescue experience and was able to coax it back in.

Carnage from the last time I drove the buggy. Got high centered with the front driveshaft sitting on the boulder. Couple obstacles later KERSNAP. Sheared the front output of the tcase. Also found the doubler adapter had almost spun the splines at some point.

Blew out my ring and pinion on the first obstacle of Odessa in Calico last year. I had just done half the trail a few months prior but couldn't get up a waterfall because no locker. Upgraded to 4.88s and dual lockers, because why not. Still need to go conquer that bitch.

Almost made it :boink:

Turned into a hassle getting back upright. Only rig I was with was already on top of the waterfall (Main/Biggest Fall on Collateral Damage). Couldn’t find any good anchors to pull myself into a good angle. Finally ran his rope down and dragged the buggy towards the fall until it started to come back upright.

I just got done spending 30 mins slowly griding my rear diff drain plug bung out so I could fit the socket on drain plug. That was tedious as fuck trying not to hit the bolt head. Side note, my gear oil was dirty as fuck and it only has like 6 or 7k miles on it.

Well, just got done installing Metal Techs lower links. In hindsight I should have done this a long time ago.'

Other carnage includes a bent passenger side upper link and mount. I also bent the top stud on my drivers side King. #fvckKing

For those that don't know the story. I bent then broke my driver side lower link on Claw Hammer 2 weekends ago. I also broke the driveshaft flange and a CV about 60 seconds later. It was an epic recovery that involved wenching about 200 yards, maybe more. After getting to a flat spot at the end of the trail a quick field repair was made with a Harbor Freight 16" pry bar, some straps, and some Gorilla tape. I limped it back to camp and the next morning called AAA. Two tows later and my rig was back in the garage.

Not what you want to see. I was so close to the end of the trail this one really hurt.

Field repair 101. Use what you got.

How the lower looked when it first bent.

TKqR6wg.jpg

How the lower looked after a bit of winching.

Mb7FtPP.jpg

Twisted the hell out of the upper link mount.

DEPdpvQ.jpg

The upper link has seen better days as well.

BFiuBrG.jpg

Gotta love King. They make the most bendable fucking shocks on the planet. #fvckKing

NbxYe2B.jpg

These fuckers shouldn't ever bend. If they do Metal Techs lifetime warranty has me covered.

6bi0FFX.jpg

So that's the carnage from Claw Hammer. I'm still waiting on the Front Range Fab uppers to arrive. Tom Woods has the driveshafts so that should be back next week. Then it's off to a local fab shop to fix that upper link mount and look into outborading the rear shocks. I should also be able to rebuild my bent King coilover from another trip by then. That's where my little #fvckKing comes from for those that don't know. I bent a King shaft on the Dusy. King refused to warranty it or even look at it for that matter. So, I will never use the word King in a post without the #fvckKing tag behind it. The Dusy carnage will be in another post soon enough. lol

This thread was needed. I'll start to dig up my old carnage photos.

Yeah, I can't wait till my photo's are old. I'm kinda getting over fixing this thing every other trip. lol

This is going to be one of my favorite threads honestly. I just hope I don’t have to post new updates on my rig too often these days

Let's make a pact to not break shit. Maybe we should start doing easy trails. lol

Easy trails are for overlanders. Wrong forum dude. Hard trails only. Hahaha

Yeah, I was joking, Hence the LOL. You guys know me better then that.

I got a call from Tom Woods(deal with it Hank) today. They not only are warrantying the repair to my rear driveshaft damage from Claw Hammer. They're also gonna cover the shipping both ways. I had them send me a UPS return label last week. Mailed it to them Wednesday and it will be back here this Wednesday. I told them flat out the yoke broke because it was a bind and they covered my ass anyway. Pretty happy with that.

That’s much better than what King was willing to do :p
That’s very impressive customer service. I’d be willing to give them my service if I ever need spicer sized joints on a driveshaft. Unfortunately I’ll only be using Toyota joints, so Tom Woods won’t be seeing my money until I can afford a buggy. My brother has a TW shaft on his Jeep and never had any issues with the driveshaft itself. He does go through u joints every year though.

Well the 1310's u-joint survived just fine. It's the 1310 yoke that blew apart. When I get the shaft back I'll try and remember to mic the joint and yoke. I still have the factory shafts sitting in the garage so I can compare them. Although I'm positive Jesse at High Angle has a pretty good write-up on exactly that.
