Hose was rubbing against the steering column. Over 300k miles it rubbed a hole in it. Original factory line and routing(read as not my fault, lol)

I figured that was probably not something you messed with on your own. Routing will be critical. Fortunately its really not to difficult to design a hose routing system around IFS where the entire axle is not articulating and the steering is going along with it. Steering would be planted and that's a bonus!

The more I take my truck out I think I want to convert to swing steering one day. I'd like to decrease my left to right steering lock so I'm not spinning my wheel like crazy at speed to correct my lines. For now I really just want to look into an upgraded pump so bumps don't rip the wheel out of my hand

I was just at JD fab...he has all that figured out for the 2nd gen...not sure how adaptable it is to your first gen...but he's using a Howe TC power steering pump ( http://www.howeperformance.com/parts/tc-pumps/ ) and a quickner ( http://www.howeperformance.com/parts/steering-quickeners/ ) its almost just a bolt in setup...said that all that bumping in the steering wheel goes away.

With that....I just bought JD fabs slide steering setup....should be installing it in the next few weeks...depending on how long it takes him to get it to me.

I was talking to Alex( has a lt 5 lug) and I guess psc has a whole pump upgrade kit for 1st gens. I'll give them a call. Whole kit is about $500 bolt on

i have this. quick steer isn't installed because it made the resistance too high. they're working on it. the new pump and slide rack is awesome. Jason (evenflow on tw) just posted his rack getting installed. Only takes some notching/gusseting and modification to the rack. It's about as good as you are gonna get with IFS without getting crazy.

Are you not going to have the hydro assist? I thought that is the whole point of the slide rack?

Ya I was down there a couple of hours ago. I got some good closeup pics of the install(Evenflow) to use as reference for mine....though its such an easy install they werent really necessary

if i blow up the rack now then ya I'll look at something better. hydro assist or full hydro would be killer but trying to keep it streetable and be able to let others drive it without a ground-school lesson before taking the wheel.... all this talk about real stuff and not funny pictures or wtf ... realization that I (collective we) need some dirt therapy.

The point of the slide is to take some of the load off the the rack and decrease its ability to flex.

I guess I'm not entirely sold on the idea that it's going to make a significant difference in the racks strength. If it was two slides that were triangulated, then it would definitely make sense, but with just another point on a cylindrical slide, it seems like marginal benefits.

Hydro assist is definitely something that is streetable. I know plenty of people that drive with hydro assist on the road with great road manners. Just makes turning easier (especially in the rocks)

We've kind of beaten at this horse but I am convinced full hydro is very safe and streetable. If nobody starts it right now, I guess I'll guinea pig into that world. @kasnerd @AssBurns

I'm going on the word of a shop that has over 20+ years of doing this exact modification on offroad vehicles that have been tested and driven hard and proven to work over the years. Sometimes you just gotta trust the professional fabricator/builder than the internet guy with 15 minutes in solidworks (not you though). Both may be right or wrong but at some point you gotta make a decision for yourself that works for you.

Im trying to stay away from custom 1 off steering solutions at this point...IE the tundra rack or Marrack(Vaporware)...if it shits itself you just cant buy one off the shelf and replace it...this solution allows me to buy a rack from Vatozone and slap it in to get off the trail but I also hope that this solution makes it so I dont have to do that.

:boink:

Care to ask what they think about full hydro? I'm getting mixed answers aside from my own experience in a zuk. I guess there's no way to say I'll be worth my salt in the engineering/manufacturing space if I can't make something happen

That slide rack idea apparently has some pretty solid roots in off-road racing, is it enough for your driving? That's another question, this crowd can break anything.

Greetings from Tucson. I hope my first post will add to this conversation.

Jon Sangel is a mechanical engineer and he managed to fit swingers into his design.
It's a very good thread so I recommend reading through it.

https://www.dezertrangers.com/threads/4x4-dbl-cab-tacoma-build.124138/

poked thru the thread a bit: page 62 has the final layout but hard to see, page 58 has CAD image of the front end.

Certainly a cool build. Very compact design being it's center mount suspension.
