Fuel injection pump service at Toyota. Having the TCV solenoid swapped while having a top down inspection done. This will probably be the only time it is ever at Toyota for anything service.

Heck yeah, I'm super excited as well. The first thing will be to go through all of the Japanese service records and sort out the time elapsed from all of the maintenance that has been done. I have some spare 1KZ-TE parts and will continue to bring parts in a little bit at a time.

It will likely get new glow plugs, injectors, replacement and secondary diesel filters, and a full fluids service. Easy stuff, nothing that I shouldn't focus on right out of the gate.

It is going to get the full eimkeith treatment on the chassis side of things.

Driving on the right itself isn't too weird. The hardest part is literally having the turn signal control and windshield wiper control flipped

Hahah. Yeah I could see that causing some issues. Wonder if you can swap a 3rd gen steering column in. If the wiring matches you should be able to flip the controls that way. Or just deal with it because I'm lazy and that's what I'd do.

At first i thought you were in the country of Georgia since i didn't recognize the city. Is the Prado grey market or can we actually import cool stuff now?

I've seen a few across various forums over the years, but I don't think any have been right hand drive and diesel. Usually just see the 3.4 models.

It might as well be a different country, all of the freedom and none of the riff raff of living in or anywhere remotely close to Atlanta. Tiny gold mining town deep in Appalachia. This truck being a 1996 is legal for import to the US.

Not an update I wanted to make ... Late last week;

At a stop light, vehicle had already been up to temp for some time. I would assume that the ECU was probably up to temp as well....

2nd start light flashed intermittently and O/D Off light would randomly come on. The truck would take off in second gear, which made it feel like it was in limp mode.

Fluids are perfect, no issues with the transmission..... Pulled the ECU to inspect it and it became clear what the issue was. Two leaked capacitors

As it turns out, the 1KZ-TE is part of a long list of Toyota engine platforms that suffer from this issue. If you've never heard about it, they're are tons of threads covering 90's Toyotas with this issue and I'm sure many junkyard cars that could've been saved had they checked the ECU.

Toyota used a type of ammonium electrolytic capacitor that performed exceptionally, but at the end of it's service life, would be prone to leaking.

This an issue that I knew existed, so I had a plan beforehand.... I didn't expect to have to address it so quickly, but I'm glad it's now rather than later.... To be continued

Toyota ECU's are very peculiar in that they only work well with low ESR (equivalent series resistance) capacitors; the long service life and other characteristics are what bode well with the ECU to manage heat. Rubycon, Nippon Chemi Con, and Panasonic are a few of the Japanese OEM suppliers.

Hard to find, but Mouser and DigiKey both have limited quantities of acceptable replacements, and in some cases, upgrades. Got the capacitance and voltage ratings then went on a hunt to get what I need.

I am opting to replace all of the electrolytic capacitors on the board as well as the tantalum capacitors that are damaged if any.

I managed to find another ECU matching my PN on eBay for a couple hundred freedom dollars. Got it on the way to have a backup because it's cheap insurance. I'll get to re-soldering all new caps in that as well. 4 of each cap ordered (one for each ECU and one spare for each as well). Less than $35 for 4 of everything; 8 total caps to do.

ECU is looking salvageable by my limited knowledge. I've been carefully cleaning the electrolytic with isopropyl alcohol and neutralizing the acid with baking soda/DI water.

Wire traces are still isolated from one another. I had to pull back parts of the solder mask that were corroded, but uncovered in tact traces.

Major service done after the first 10,000 km.. Running Delo 400 XLE every oil change and running an motor flush for the foreseeable future to see what kind of improvements we get. So far, the Delo full synthetic has helped it run more smoothly across the range.


Minor improvement as of late was the lighting... replaced the OG yellow Nekon spots with some off-brand ARB Intensity "style" lights; to no surprise, it was a huge improvement. I got my hands on some VZJ Land Cruiser facelift headlight shrouds, brackets, and grille (kit) for less than a pair of OEM clear lenses. Dropped in a set of fairly standard 7" round 'jeep style' headlights and I can finally see the deer before I kill them!

This version of the 3rd gen chassis comes with a welded in crossmember at the ends of the frame rails, and in a moment of desperation, I cut out the overlapping ends and butt-welded/ground smooth to install a hitch. I robbed the hitch from the 3rd gen and got to work... 2 hours start to finish!



I love Toyota parts interchange.
