Realistically, What Tires Should You Run?

The real question is, where’s the spare going? It won’t fit in the stock location without making contact with the panhard. At least a 285/75/16 won’t, and a 255/80/17 is just as big in diameter if not slightly bigger

It won't fit aired down and clear the panhard? If you have oba it shouldn't be a problem. I've never run a 33+ in the stock spot but a 32 fit just fine.

Yeah a 265/75/16 fits fine but any larger won’t clear. I had a 286/75/16 aired down to low double digits and it still rubbed the panhard bar. The skinny 33 will still be an issue.

Came across this size after doing some tire research. Cool size, AT vs MT, lightish, D range. I know KO2s have an iffy reputation these days but might be a good size for a lot of the 3rd gen 4R/ 1st gen taco guys who want something a little bigger then 255 and D load range

What psi are you dudes running for street driving? My truck is a weekend warrior and it’s getting some toyo at3 34x10.5r17s D loads next month (finally). D load shouldn’t run as harsh as an E. doubt I’ll be at 35psi like my SL wildpeaks I have now. I figure chalk test is the answer so just looking for a starting point.

E rated so I run like 32-35 or else they're super stiff

I ran 28 front and 22 rear on my 1GTaco with E load tires. They road stupid stiff otherwise. My Nittos are D load and I run 30 front 25 rear and it's perfect

On the streets mine had some kind of weird oscillation at about 60mph (as many 4Runner owners complain about). I increased pressure until it went away (about 36-38psi). So that kind of dictated how I was driving them. C-load KO2s in my case, but it also happened with my factory tires. I ran E-load on my previous vehicle at pretty high pressures and it wasn't comfortable at all and brought them down to where it felt reasonable, but still in the 30s.

This is an interesting tire size. I'm due for tires, so this size might be something to think about, especially that I'm not committed to cutting into the cab and/or tubbing in order to fit 35s (315s) onto my turd gen taco.

I used to run 255/80/17 before switching to 285/70/17, and I've noticed a huge difference in on street handling on 285s. It shouldn't be a big surprise that tires with ~ 1.25" wider contact patch would stick to the road better. That 34x10.5x17 would bring tire width down to nearly stock 165/70/16, but with much taller sidewall. Hmmm, yeah... overthinking stuff as usual

Right now I have Cooper ST Maxx 285/70/17 E load, and run them at ~30 psi to make them feel "comfortable" and help them wear evenly.

My thoughts exactly. I moved to the “mountains” so I want something that isn’t too skinny like a 255 for snow wheeling but still a narrow contact patch with some height. This at3 is looking perfect for my use case other than being a tad heavier then I’d like and D instead of C load but pretty damn close to perfect for yotas who do moderate wheeling.

Did you lose a bunch more power between the 285s vs 255?

Short answer, YES. It’s a way heavier E load tire, with 1.25" wider contact patch - more rolling resistance I feel it the most during highway speeds coming up on a up-grade/hill, which is multiplied by 3rd gen Tacos not having enough torque and being geared too tall. But... since it's a turd gen Taco, I was able to get a tune to try to compensate for it, at least in some way
