Does anyone know if one is bigger than the other, or hangs down lower?

My new budbuilt belly skid doesn't fit my 2001 4Runner without adding a bunch of washers as spacers between the skid and the crossmembers because it interferes with the t-case (multimode) by like half an inch. And yes, I pulled that goofy little factory skid off the t-case. My thinking is that budbuilt designed these skids around a J shift truck and the multimode case is a little larger.

I don’t recall them being any lower, but I think the multimode case is around 4.5” longer or something like that. I swapped in a J-shift on mine when the actuator went out on the multimode. I also installed the clocking ring on it when I installed the J-shift so hard to really gauge if it hung down any lower. I don’t think it does. I think the front of the case is just longer but the rear is the same from what it looks like.

Have you checked the transmission mount?

If it is bad, it will sit lower and could cause the skid contact problem.

I put a new OEM trans mount in it about a year and a half ago, so I don't think that's it, but good thinking.

With a stack of washers between the skid and crossmembers it's not rattling too bad, so I might just stick some foam tape on the top of the skid under the T-case to dampen it and go on with my life.
