There a proper break in procedure for a new gun?

what gun and what type of accuracy are you trying to achieve

pistol, shotgun, rifle (not bolt action) shoot it till it jams, clean, shoot some more

bolt action precision rifle. shoot it till the groups open up, clean, shoot again till the groups open up, clean, repeat

I will caveat my post with the following.

My requirements are combat accuracy for pistol, rifle, shotgun. Basically center of mass good clean hits.

For bolt action I use to shot precision rifle competition. I was/am a middle of the pack shooter and any negligible improvement you may get from a strict barrel break in process would most likely not show up in any score improvement. All my issues that kept me in the middle of the pack had to do with lack of practice time, not being able to find targets, etc.. during the matches

@85straight first thing you should do is learn to pop the upper. It's not that hard after a couple times. Lock it open, flip the front switch facing up, then pull like your gonna rack it and hit the trigger as it starts to close. My XD didn't have any oil on it.

Oil the springs, and the channels on both sides of the lower.

@85straight since we’re on the subject of a first gun we might as well talk about all the rest of the crap you’ll need:
Range bag. I know the XD comes with a lockable case but a proper range bag should be on your future.
Cleaning kit with proper size brushes/jags. I don’t like using the loops for patches. Oh get good cleaner and lots of extra patches and q-tips. For a cleaner I like m-pro 7 but keep hoppe’s no 9 also.
A gun safe
Quality ammo
Training (this is never ending IMO, refreshers are always a good thing)

Solid advice!
As far as break in: Even my comp rifles I just sight it in and find a load that shoots! Tried different break in methods and if the barrel will shoot it will shoot.

Was gonna clean mine earlier while I was taking pics, but I only have 130 rounds since the last cleaning and that Winchester doesn't burn as dirty as the aguila I was shooting before. Just needed some lube, which apparently I'm officially out of.
