I found a boat for 150. Might jump on it this week and take it out Sunday
Does it come with a trailer and trolling motor or just a row boat to be hauled on top of the truck? That's a hell of a price!

Struck out on the deer hunt. We did manage a few rabbits that we roasted up in camp. Didn't put in for any spring hunts this year.

Sorry about your luck bro. I'm going out Thursday. Friday is opening day. I've got dangerously high hopes. Last year we (me and pops) headed out on opening day, got to camp late morning, hiked up a massively vertical foothill and figured out where we wanted to be when the sun came up the next day. I shot a buck at around 9:30 that next morning. I feel like it kinda spoiled me and got my expectations up way too high for this year. But we're hunting the same area so maybe we'll luck out. Last year it was only me hunting. This year pops is hunting too so we've got to find two bucks to warrant a victory cigar.

Last sunday I was cruising around the Santa Rita experimental range near Tucson hunting quail. As I rounded a hackberry bush, the rattling started, fast and furious... I back peddled (scared as a mouse in a cat's mouth) and somehow made a headshot on the side step on this big ass diamondback. I couldn't have seen it from my angle of approach but I was within a foot or two of him when he started rattling. He was in that ready to strike "s" formation they do and my fight or flight instinct kicked in when I saw that big ass mother fucker ready to kill me. Anyway, he was chowed down upon, tanned and mounted. I figure that with the head, he was 53", and just look at the girth of him compared to my shotgun (3rd pic). He was a big ass snake and aggressive. Scared me into ordering snake gaiters. Lol

I thought so! Lol. I can't exactly say it's the biggest I've ever seen, but I don't remember ever seeing a bigger one. I mean, he's not setting any records, but being startled by it like that and then seeing that big, girthy bastard ready to strike... like I said, instinct took over. My mind was saying "you're out of striking range, you don't need to shoot it," but my body was acting of its own accord, aiming and firing. The only way I made a headshot while on the move like that is due to muscle memory. When I calmed down enough to assess the situation I found that I'd already loaded another shell and picked up my empty. It was all action without thought. I've had plenty of situations with rattlers where I could have died just as easily but they never really bothered me. Something about the way this incident went down just shook me. I can't remember ever being that scared. He was scared of me so he rattled and readied to strike... I was scared of him, so I shot him. I felt a bit bad afterward, but instinct is primal man. You can't stop that shit.

No doubt. I almost stepped on a sidewinder in Joshua tree while we were hiking by moonlight. Scared the fuck out of me watching that big bastard take off into the bushes. We took a different route back to camp. He was probably 2 feet away and easily could have got me. Big ole bastard.

I shot 3 rattlers in a one week span and I'd like to not shoot any more for a good long while. I don't hate them, or even dislike them. In fact, I kinda dig 'em but if you're gonna kill me, I'm gonna kill you first. Im looking forward to a winter hunting season where I don't have anymore lethal run-ins with them.

Yep. They shouldn't still be out. Fucking weather. Couple more weeks and they'll be hibernating. Hopefully.

I had a run-in like that with an Arizona black. Walking down a wash by moonlight. I was probably within 3' of it when it started rattling. I back peddled my ass off and when I finally got my headlamp on it, I was just fascinated by it because I'd never seen that species before. Beautiful snake!

I'm kinda jealous that you got to see a sidewinder. I haven't had the privilege yet. Although, yours was a scary ass encounter.

Im hoping that I'll have better luck uploading pics now and I'll be able to make this thread more interesting. If the pic posting goes well stay tuned for more frequent/interesting posts.

Should be good to go. I changed the image processor and it seems to be working better.

I've only seen one black and it was definitely one of the scariest encounters I've had with a rattler. I was young, like 11 or 12, we we're down in the wash just before Chiva falls and we thought we saw a king snake. Chased him down into a hollow out in a tree and grabbed him and realized he was a big mutha fucka... once he got out to the other side of the hollow he rattled like a banshee and we scattered. Beautiful snake, but a scary son of a bitch.

Thanks for that! Before I couldn't load anything over about 3.5 mb. One of the pics I loaded last night was over 12 so it's definitely made a difference.

Shit bro! You actually picked it up before you realized? That must have scared the piss out of you.

Funny story... that's where I saw that Arizona black. In the wash before Chiva falls. Couldn't have been the same one because this was about 4 years ago but I guess that must be a good area for them. Maybe we need to do a night run out there and search the wash with flashlights for them. It'd be cool to get some good pics of one.
