Well I have been daily driving the pig to work. The steering is extremely sloppy which I have narrowed down to one or two tierod ends. That may explain why there is a spare new one in the truck (score!)

I have been loving the manual trans. Even though this thing is slow, I am having more fun driving this than my supercharged v6 auto taco. I am very sad about not being able to cleanly downshift into 3rd and 2nd. I have located a 2014 5speed 1 hr away and they only want $550 for it. This will give me an excuse to pull the transfer cases apart and attempt to reseal them up, atleast in some areas. I am not looking forward to removing the bellhousing bolts but it’s a price worth paying.

I am getting some dumb check engine lights still. Maf sensor code didn’t go away with cleaning so looks like I will need to replace it. It is saying one of the grounds isn’t happy on the secondary air injection which seems like an easy enough fix. The other two are evap related and I think it’s the evap canister box being cracked. I am going to try and just rtv it up and see if that solves the problem. I don’t mind the check engine light being on but I have decided I would like it off so that way if it comes on for something important I will know.

The good news is I am almost done with engine break in period. Once that is overwith I am ready to take this thing out and see what it can do offroad.. or what I can do since I am a pussy. I am also on the look out for some decent 37s. These are mismatched and pretty worn out. I wouldn’t mind keeping the best for a spare.

Another fun week in the books. Buy new clutch master cylinder from Toyota, fight getting it installed (POS flare fitting didn’t want to go into its new home). Finally get it in. Attempt to bleed the air out of the system andddd nothing. Took it out checked everything put it back in, still nada. Faulty shit from Toyota. Man I was pissed thinking I was gonna have to tow the shitbox home from work. Put the old one in and thank god it let me bleed it.

I found the reason my steering was shit. One tierod for sure shot, another on the way out, and also the ubolts on the front axle were loose. Funny enough tightening everything up has brought the death wobbley shit back.

Oh I also picked up a used transmission from a dismantling yard. Came from a 2014 with 63k on the dash.

I drained the fluid and it is way cleaner than the one that was in the truck. Fingers crossed no bits of syncros in this one. This will gove me an excuse to reseal the transfer and crawl box when it comes out.
Also one of the previous owners must have loved sun flower seeds. They are fucking everywhere under the carpet. Speaking of carpet, it’s getting thrown away. I have vinyl flooring to install because fuck carpet in a truck. Soon this thing is gonna be ripping I hope.

Yep. About how I feel about this Jetta sitting in my driveway. Paid 2k, got about 1000 into it, but I'll be happy to get that 2k back right now. Needs to go.
I know that feeling brother. Get out while you can. Or drive the piss out of it for a bit, then sell it.

I stopped to take some pictures of the filth under the carpet. This is probably -1000 seeds. I have found a lighter, a lot of pens, a fork, and random metal parts... idk how tf this shit all got down here. Oh and brake fluid, every where.
On the plus side I replaced two broken studs on the rear axle. The vatozone dormans are a tiny bit like 1/8” shorter than the oem ones. Still gonna send it tho

The look of a distressed taco!

Rear case shifter was barely held on, tightened the two bolts you can see. The other two were extremely annoying to reach so they are finger tight. Maybe it will stop leaking now lol (from the top).

After that I replaced the clutch master cylinder (again). Fuck who ever designed the hard line setup for that. Fuck you in the ass with a cactus. I also did the slave cylinder which was easy thankfully. And this time the oem part worked flawless!

It was getting dark and I debated packing up shop, but screw that I have way too many tools out I don’t want to put them away yet.

Much better than carpet. I think all tacos should have came like this.

I got the drivers seat in too but didn’t get a pic. Currently eating dinner and will go put all my tools away after. I would say it was a successful weekend of getting shit done.

Dude that thing is going to fly when it does run. All that weight saving when you get them tons of dirt out.

I know dude! I took it for a spin just now and I wanna say maybe 10 hp lol. I should have taken pictures when I emptied my wetvac tank (3 times) it was absolutely disgusting.
Next priority is fixing the death wobble. I am hoping it’s just worn out tierods. Oh also swapping out the master/slave cylinder made shifting so much nicer now jesus christ. I thought I was going to have to switch back to an oem clutch because it was an off/on switch. I guess she just needed some freshie parts now I can actually slip it.

The death wobble on my Zuk was solved with new leaf spring bushings and and a front axle seal and shims rebuild. Hopefully the bushings can take care of it if not it’s going to be another $400 in the money pit. It was worth it for me because I could drive it with one finger on the wheel afterwards.

The truck has been on my nerves and I fucked my finger up pretty good so I haven’t done much. But these leaf spring hanger mounts annoy me.

6A987E48-AC09-495B-A236-081D96EE6165.jpegSo last weekend I discovered both rear leafs were cracked, and they were stock leafs... so I called Toyota on monday they looked up the vin and were like ok yea we will do the leafs and like 5 other recalls. So guess who got new springs!
BD825CD4-59C4-4E7D-AFC9-C23A38533A51.jpegThey even replaced the spiral cable so the airbag light is off now. One less light on the xmas tree dash. If my hangover headache ever goes away I may do the front tierods and drag links today to see if that will solve my death wobble.

It has been a long week of wrenching. Monday was my work truck replaced front hearings (fuck 1st gen tundra bearings), tuesday was different work truck rebuilding front calipers, weds I helped my coworker rebuild his calipers on his car and adjusted his drum brakes + flushed all the brake fluid. Yesterday I went and pulled a supercharger and other goodies off a friends truck. If I would have known I was going to have a spare supercharger I would have v6 swapped this truck.

Wow, it’s been a long time since I have touched this thing.
So basically after pulling the supercharger from that truck, I pretty much haven’t done any mechanical things (If anyone is looking for a v6 supercharger hit me up lol). I got pretty burnt out. The good news is finally my hand has healed and I recently started working on big red again.

Went to a buddies work place on the weekend since they get to use the facility when it’s closed (lift!!)
Replaced all 4 tierod ends, tightened steering box bolts, pitman arm bolt, and some leafspring bolts since they were all loose.
I have come to the realization that the guy who owned the truck before me either didn’t finish this vision of his, or he swapped a bunch of parts out for his next build. Nothing makes sense. Front driveline angle is maxed out at ride height, 1” of uptravel in the rear w/ stock springs, but he has a custom mount for the rear shackle so it makes me wonder wtf is going on down there. Like why?

I am hoping to make a list of things that I can accomplish myself, and a list of things I want to so but can’t with my lack of tools (welder, 220 power source mainly).

I am highly considering a 3 link in the front. The leaf springs are bending all crazy when turning on pavement which is the crazy popping noise. Then I would like to see if some better rear leafs can help the piss poor rear setup.

I have finally completed phase 1 of my at home shop build. Phase 2 will be laying the concrete around where the shop is going to be, with 2.5 being the concrete posts for the lift(s). Phase 3 will be either putting the lift in, or building the shop itself. Won’t be able to afford both at the same time unless I wait a bit longer than I want to.

I have a weekend of wrenching planned on my supercharged taco, then some oil changes for family vehicles and hopefully I can go over big red once more and find more loose bolts. I hope everyone here had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hopefully I have this truck in a wheel able state before the end of the year.
